Typological and functional exploration

London’s planning policies aim for housing intensification but seek to protect employment uses, including industry and warehousing. In this context, we explored the possibilities for intensifying employment areas through high-density building typologies which could include residential accommodation in close proximity. Based on a case study of the and international best practice research, we proposed a range of strategies at area, block and building scale proposing realistic design solutions for issues such as transport and logistics, noise and visual amenity, public space quality and shared social infrastructure. Interviews with international experts provide a picture of obstacles and delivery strategies.

TEN Town Centre Enhancement in North London
2004-5
Intensification study and design proposals

The London Development Agency and the Government Office for London commissioned Urhahn Urban Design to conduct a design led study to investigate town centre intensification options in North London. The commission was focused on assessing the potential housing capacity of selected town centre locations. We prepared initial design studies for ten locations as a means of illustrating the scope of potential town centre enhancement strategies. This study contributes to policies to intensify land use and the number of residences in London, as outlined in the London Plan.
